Ch. 10: Government Regulation of Consumer Interests 21/02/2008 09:36:00 Special Interest Groups A group of persons that attempts to influence government decisions as it  appeals for special consideration for its own particular concerns   try and get  people who are going to be affected by something to help change it o Medical service providers (AMA) o An industry (drugs, health, tobacco) o Consumers over age 50 (AARP) o Environmentalists o Consumers Lobbyists Try to influence legislators and regulators to take a particular action that  favors a special interest they represent o Ex. Sugar beet growers Must register with the government o Are over 35,000 More than 330 per senator Also work at local and state levels Lobbyists work hard to maintain good relationships with government workers Consumer Lobbyists National Consumers League   oldest in US
