Using Trade Books in the Content Areas Amal Unbound - Aisha Saeed Book Description: Life is pleasant in the small Pakistani village where Amal lives with her parents and three sisters. She attends school, take trips to the market and helps her mother with her younger siblings. That all changes when Amal goes shopping alone and has a small accident with the son of the village's corrupt landlord. Amal is now indebted to the Kahn family to live as a servant. Sadly she is forced to leave the love and comfort of her home. This story embraces the Pakistani culture; the promising and the nefarious. It teaches us that even one voice, if heard and loud enough, has the power to change things. A true homage to Malala Yousafzai and all the countless girls worldwide that stand tall in order to make a difference Why I chose this books: This story for middle schoolers shines a light on so many issues that are worlds away from the world students are used to. It is so wonderful to see diverse books that reveals to students the stories of children like them with stories so very different from their own. It helps them to realize how important education is and that not everyone in the world has this access. It is also a plus that girls can read about a strong, intelligent female main character.
