Lab Performed: 03/14/19 Report Due: 03/21/19 Experiment 8B: Esterification Reaction: n -Butyl Acetate Objective The main purpose of this experiment is to induce esterification by promoting the reaction of 1- butanol (alcohol) with acetic acid (carboxylic acid), in sulfuric acid (catalyst), in order to produce n-butyl acetate (and water as a biproduct). In carrying out the experiment, we will promote reflux in the reaction system, using a water condenser. As mentioned, water will be produced, therefore silica gel (added to the reaction) and driete will be used to remove any water produced. (in a drying tube). Diethyl ether and 5% sodium bicarbonate will be used in order to extract the organic layer, as followed by concentration due to heat. In order to analyze our product, we will utilize the features of gas-chromatography. Experimental Procedure: The procedure was followed as described in Mayo, pages 201-203, with the modifications listed in the Canvas document. Due to time constraints, GC data was obtained from Emily . Reaction Scheme:

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
