Snapshot Chloe Ledford #37: Winged Victory of Samothrace Funky (Focus): The focus of this Hellenistic art is the now headless body of Goddess Nike planted atop a ship with stretching wings and a thin cloth that appears to fall in folds. When viewed at a three-quarters perspective, the body of Nike flows and even forms shapes such as a right triangle. Many have theories on what she was holding before the loss of her arms; perhaps a trumpet, or simply an open hand, but it is merely speculation. Caravaggio (Content): Winged Victory of Samothrace is a sculpture depicting the goddess of victory at the front of the boat celebrating a naval victory. Although the sculpture is now missing its arms and head, it still conveys much meaning pertaining to the Hellenistic style through passion shown by her stance and the perceived motion, in addition to evoking emotion from the confidence seen in her position, almost exciting viewers because they understand the triumph recently achieved. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
