Hailey Fitch FRE 2710 3/1/19 Exam I Essay Questions 2. Chartres Cathedral was built during the 13th century, modeling as the first of what would be considered a classic cathedral, known for its hallowed out walls and tall stained glass windows, with remarkable architecture overall. In the 16th century a second spire was built onto the Cathedral. The Cathedral has been, and even continues to be an important place for Catholic pilgrimage. Continuing to be well known for a site of medieval pilgrimage, containing what was thought to be an old garment of the virgin mary herself. It also worked as a school during the same time, in the middle ages as well. It is considered an example of Gothic art, though it was built with light and height to make you feel , “closer to heaven”. When it was built the cathedral was described as a “Frankish” work, the term gothic wasn’t born until the 15th century to describe it. Having two bell towers, or pires, both built at different times, the second being built following a set of fires. The second bell towers frame was built to be shaped like that of a ship’s hull, upside down; displaying steep rafters. The first spire, being built during the original build of the Cathedral, contrasts majorly to the more recently built spire. The first spire was a taller, skinner more hallowed and detailed, to just look at it, it has far more carvings, windows, and details over all, being extremely beautiful, yet appearing far weaker in contrast to the newer spire. The newer spire, as mentioned before was mention being built in a similar layout to that of a “ships hull”. It is a slightly shorter, wider, and more solid structure. The windows and detailing located on the spire are placed significantly lower, than those located on the original.
