Group Typology SOCW 6121: Advanced Clinical Social Work Practice Walden University March 24, 2019 Group Typology Social workers must have a solid understanding of a variety of modalities when working with clients. Clinical social workers must understand group typology so that they can place their clients in the appropriate group should their presenting problem
require it. In the pages that follow I will discuss the case of Paula Cortez and the type of group that would be appropriate for her case. The Cortez Family Study Paula Cortez is a 43-year-old Colombian female with a complicated case. She has physical health diagnoses of HIV, Hepatitis C, and ulcerations on her feet. To further complicate matters Paula is pregnant and is also diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. Over time Paula has had numerous treatment providers including a psychiatrist, social worker, OB nurse, and primary care physician which have attempted to assist Paula in improving her health with little success. Her providers all agree that Paula is decompensating due to her continued noncompliance with treatment recommendations and lack of social support (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014). Paula would benefit from a task group to assist her. Target Behaviors Paula needs to be empowered to take some personal responsibility for her health and gain a better understanding of the consequences of her actions on her physical health.
