Chapter 8: Population Issues
Image of page 1
Sampling Theory Sampling Theory Provides the foundation for understanding the process and implications of selecting participants for a particular study. Focus is on Selecting samples that reflect larger total populations The conclusions researched from the research sample should apply to the population.

Sampling Sampling that systematically differ from the population in some way are said to be biased. Samples that are not biased are random samples – samples in which each observation in the population has an equal chance of being selected. Logistically, random samples can be selected by assigning each observation a consecutive number (1, 2, 3..) and then choosing the observations by selecting numbers from a random numbers table or by using a computer-assisted random numbers generator.

Sampling Even though the importance of random selection from a population has been emphasized, it must be pointed out that random selection is almost always an impossibility in applied research. For all practical purposes, it is not possible to select participants for a treatment study from across the country; researchers are fortunate to be able to afford to select clients locally.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
