Janelle Ogren Introduction to Visual Culture Professor Germann September 5, 2007 Assignment 1 Francois Boucher’s painting, La Toilette, shows the scene of a seated young woman tying a garter on her leg while her maid stands by. Both the young woman and her maid are wearing sophisticated clothing that are blue and white in color. The dark and mostly brown colored room in which they are in is in shambles. There are items strewn across the floor in a disorganized manner, but neither of the women seem affected by this. Also, there is a small cat, who also seems content, lying at the feet of the young woman. While every person has a different perception and reaction to this painting, there seems to be numerous contrasts within the painting. I will focus on these contrasts, why I noticed them and the order in which I noticed them. There are a few things within Boucher’s painting that struck me at first glance. What I noticed first were the colors that Boucher used and how they seem to be
