Many smartphone manufacturers and cellular providers throw around these two terms, but what does it really mean for the user? Inside of this article by Digital Trends they state the differences in term of real LTE and 4G speeds vs. what consumers are actually provided with.4G stands for fourth generation, just as 3G stands for third generation. LTE stands for long term evolution. These are the terms used to describe the download and upload speed standards. These speeds that were set as standards were set above realistic expectations to give innovators benchmarks to reach for. However the governing body that set these standard has allowed providers to claim LTE standards as long as their 4G networks were providing a considerable upgrade above regular 3G/HSPA service for customers. This would be like claiming I had landed on the moon, when in reality I just had gotten really close, closer than the ship that was used before.
