Experiment 4C: Solvent Extraction II: Acid-Base Extraction Using A Two-Component Mixture of a Base and a Neutral Substance Objective: The purpose of this lab is to apply solvent extraction techniques and demonstrate how they can be applied effectively to the separation of organic acids, bases, and neutral compounds. We then calculate our percent of recovered solid. Experimental Procedure: The procedure was followed as described in Mayo, pages 148-150, with the modifications listed in the posted Blackboard document. Additional modifications to the procedure included the following: 1. You only did either acid (benzoic acid) or base (ethyl 4-aminobenzoate) with the neutral compound, which was assigned, rather than both. 2. We used 75 mg of acid and neutral compound (9- fluorenone) instead of 50 mg 3. Separation and isolation of the basic component will be omitted. 4. We only needed to record the melting point of the 9-fluorenone Reaction Scheme: C 7 H 6 O 2 + NaOH Na C 7 H 5 O 2 + H 2 O The neutral is not in this equation because it is not reacting with the NaOH, benzoic acid is.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
