B. What is bronchiolitis, and what are its causes? In the discharge summary, the baby was seen for a "viral-type" syndrome. What is the likely name for this virus, based on the information in A.D.A.M.? Bronchiolitis is swelling and mucus buildup in the smallest air passages in the lungs. Usually due to a viral infection. Bronchiolitis generally affects children under the age of two years old and most common in infants with in the 3-6-month age. This is common and sometimes a severe illness. The most common cause is RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) and more than half of all infants are exposed to this virus by the time they have their first birthday. Some other viruses that can cause bronchiolitis are Adenovirus, influenza, and parainfluenza. The baby was most likely seen for RSV due to his symptoms of respiratory distress.
