Nelson SOC-220 February 24, 2019 Stacey Tucker Social Problems Within Education Some social problems within educational institutions are school shootings, racial discrimination, and disability discrimination. It was documented that in 2013, 85% of American public schools experienced at least one episode of crime, including school shootings (Sullivan, 2016). Racial discrimination is also shown at schools where students are being set apart from other students due to their race and/or skin color. Lastly, disability discrimination is seen in teaching methods such as ‘tracking’, where students are taught in groups based on their performance in class and test scores (Sullivan, 2016). This however has shown to affect a student’s confidence of their ability to learn. Social problems within social institutions have perpetuated human trafficking by children running away from school issues and women trying to flee from being discriminated by gender inequality in society.
