1. What is the function of two kinds of meristimatic tissue? Give examples of cell structures in your answer. Apical Meristems – meristematic tissue found at or near tips of roots and shoots; responsible for primary growth Protoderm – lies around the outside of the stem; develops into epidermis Ground Meristem – develops into pith and cork cambium Procambium – lies just inside the protoderm; develops into primary xylem and phloem and vascular cambium Lateral Meristems – growth of secondary tissue responsible for lateral growth of the plant around the stem Vascular Cambium – found in the stems of perennial dicots; location of growth of secondary xylem and phloem Cork Cambium – found in the stems of perennial dicots and is part of the periderm; protective layer that helps to hold water in plant 2.
