Thirteen years of schooling may result in the students feeling burnt out and tired of the studying, lectures, and exams. However, there is an opportunity available to students in order to break free from the stress of four more years of schooling. This opportunity allows the students to volunteer, travel, or make money during the break away from school. This opportunity is called the gap year, which is gaining more traction among young adults in our society. After I graduated from high school, I took a gap year that involved a missions trip and work; it completely changed my life. The gap year is a growing opportunity for young adults that colleges now support, it brings extraordinary experiences, and produces amazing qualities and characteristics in the students who pursue it.The gap year, according Sara D. Sparks and Kay Dorko in their article, “Scholars SuggestAdding ‘Gap Year’ May Encourage College Completion,”is a period either post high school graduation, between college years, or after college graduation that consists of either six months or one year of travel, service learning, or other experimental programs (Sparks and Dorko 12). Once a student has graduated from college and begins their career and adult life, they then obtainmore responsibilities than they previously had. Due to the responsibilities that come with a job and possibly a family life, it would be much more difficult to break free from it and experience what the gap year can bring. When a student has graduated high school, they are not forced to do anything and usually don’t have great responsibilities; the same is true for those who would take

Also, there is no time like the present, and youth does not last long. It is important to make the most of a person’s youth and indulge themselves in new cultures, activities, and programs. The gap year does just this for the young adult. The gap year was originally highly popular in Europe, especially Britain. Eventually, in the 1980’s, it made its way to America where it is now gaining popularity due to the evidence of its success among young adults as well as the influence of public icons who had taken the gap year. Max Kutner in his article, “Harvard Can Wait,” informs the reader thatboth Prince Henry and Prince William had taken gap years in the early 2000’s (Kutner 60). Due to these public icons taking a gap year, it led to the rise of its growing interest in Britain as well as America.
