Watched video at http://www.iwo.com/heroes.htm ; radio interview: http://www.federalnewsradio.com/emedia/59677.wma War on Terrorism: Nov. 13, 2001, granted President the right to detain people suspected of terrorism or suspected to be connected to terrorism without a hearing, charge, or legal attorney. The 5 th amendment protects American citizens from this. Article one, sec. 9 of constitution says that the writ of Habeas corpus cannot be suspended (Habeas corpus: Latin for “bring the body forward”) 01/25/07 The AJC requested a copy of the video from the Miami-Dade Police Dept., under the state’s public records law. Tom Clyde, attorney for the AJC, said Florida law requested records to be held for at least 30 days under the law. Miami-Dade County police have deleted their video of last week’s airport incident involving Vick. Airport officials won’t release their copy of the video either, citing national security concerns. Juvenile hearings are the only records not available to the public in Georgia. Grambling State University shut down the production of the school’s student newspaper, The Gramblinite, until the administration can guarantee greater “quality assurance” of the paper. o Oversteps boundaries of the first amendment. Ohio University students were sent an e-mail that they were in violation of not protesting in the designated “free speech zones” University of Georgia Freedom of Expression Policies: can’t protest in buildings other than Memorial Hall or Tate, must make a scheduled appointment, Must not interfere with schedules ceremonies or activities, may hand out pamphlets or flyers. Walter Lippmann - Journalist, a media critic and a philosopher who argued that true democracy is a goal that could not be reached in a complex, industrial world. o Said that journalists tend to generalize about other people based on fixed ideas. Journalists are more apt to believe “the pictures in their heads” than to use critical thinking skills. Humans condense ideas into symbols and journalism is the major cause for most of these symbols. Stereotypes: standardized conception or image of a specific group of people or objects. Stereotypes are “mental cookie cutters” o Characteristics of stereotypes: more simple than reality, capable of summarizing reality into only 2 or 3 sentences, acquired secondhand:

people acquire and absorb stereotypes from cultural mediators rather than from their own direct experience with the groups being stereotyped. o Erroneous: all stereotypes are false. Some are less false than others, and (more important) some are less harmful than others. But all are false by their very nature. o
