Surname 1 Name Instructor Institution Date Comparing and contrasting Spain’s and England’s first voyage around the world Spain and England were the first nations to commission explorations around the world. Ferdinand Magellan of Spain was the first explorer to undertake an exploration around the world even though he himself did not make it through the entire voyage while Sir Francis drake was the first explorer from England to explore around the world. This explorations had many impacts in the history of the world as it led to discovery of new lands, people and cultures, plants and animals. The voyages were faced with many challenges ranging from harsh weather, hostile communities and attacks from rivals in sea. Despite the challenges both parties completed the voyages leading to acquisition of knowledge, wealth, land and prestige. The voyages confirmed that the world was round as earlier suggested by scientists. This paper aims to compare and contrast the experiences and impacts of these voyages. Both voyages experienced harsh sea conditions like storms which disadvantaged the explorers. In addition, change in direction of winds affected the voyagers as the technology of ships sailing majorly depended on the direction the wind was blowing. No sooner had the English voyage commenced than it was interrupted by change in direction forcing Drake and his crew to go back to Plymouth for repairs. (Francis). In the case of Ferdinand, the voyagers also experienced harsh weather conditions which at times led them off course.
