I have chosen to focus on the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki for my historical research paper. The United States changed history when they decided to drop the first ever atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in hopes to put an end to WWII. At this time Harry Truman was president of the United States and had the overall say of whether or not the bomb was to be used. In August of 1945 the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and days later on Nagasaki. The bomb immediately killed over 80,000 people and thousands more following the bombings due to the radioactive effects of the bomb. It was often portrayed that only Truman made the decision to drop the atomic bomb. There is a lot of controversy surrounding this topic. Many believed that the use of the bomb would save millions of lives by avoiding an invasion and ending the war early, while many others believed the use of the bomb was not deemed a military necessity, as Japan was weakening rapidly and nearing a surrender.
