Introduction: The purpose of this experiment was to prepare the alkyl halide n -butyl bromide starting from an alcohol. N -butyl bromide, which is an alkylating agent, is used as an organic laboratory reagent, and an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals notably for pharmaceuticals, insecticides, quaternary ammonium compounds, and pigments. The compound is also used as a solvent and as a chain-transfer agent for styrene polymerization. All of these uses make the effective production of this alkyl halide very important. The most suitable way to prepare a primary alkyl bromide is to heat the corresponding alcohol with a mixture of sodium or potassium bromide and sulfuric acid. This experiment showed the steps taken in its formation starting from n -butyl alcohol. Chemicals Used : n -butyl alcohol (butan-1-ol) CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 OH Sodium bromide dehydrate NaBr Sodium hydroxide solution (dilute) NaOH Sulfuric Acid Water (distilled) H 2 O Calcium chloride CaCl 2 2

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
