Introduction to Computer Architectures 1 ICAR Laboratory Answers : EDSAC Question , what is this computer's maximum memory size? How many bits are stored in each memory location? How many bits are stored in each long tank? EDSAC memory was 1024 x 18bits, however, owing to implementation reason not all the bits could be accessed. Each delay line could store 32 x 18bits, the machine had 32 delay lines so memory = 32x32x18 = 18432 Question , how many instructions and data types did this computer support? Had a 5bit opcode field so 2^5, but did not use all possible opcode values. All instructions used the same instruction format, LSB indicated if data was a long or short data type, therefore, two data formates, however, these formats could be used to represent fixed point and characters, could be argued it could support 5 data types. Question , Can you see why the dummy instruction P1F is the data value 2? If your not sure have a look at the examples below, look at the bit patterns as signed values. P1F = 00000 0 0000000001 0 = 2 Question, should see the values 0,1,2,3 stored in memory location 96 – 99 as below.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
