Modern History American graffiti began in the late 1960s – early 1970s on New York subway cars. First graffiti artists include Cornbread and TAKI 183. Many graffiti artists were teenagers so that they could not be tried in court as adults if they were caught. Began showing up on train cars and buildings as well. Graffiti writers display their name/tag everywhere, however, they also have to protect their identity to avoid legal repercussions.
Vandalism Defined as, “Action involving deliberate destruction of or damage to public or private property.” By definition of graffiti and vandalism, graffiti is illegal and a damaging of property. Due to this factor, graffiti is one of the most controversial forms of visual art.
