Acquaviva 1 Miles Acquaviva Mrs. DePalma English 11H 6 June 18 A Crucible and The Crucible What is a crucible? From the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a crucible is “a vessel… used for melting and calcining a substance that requires a high degree of heat”, “a severe test”, or “a place or situation in which concentrate forces interact to cause or influence change or development”. All of the definitions of “crucible” apply to Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible , and some apply in more ways than one. On the surface, The Crucible is a story about the witch hunt in Salem, Mass. in the late 1600s. But, Arthur Miller had little interest in the witch hunt, since he had just experienced a witch hunt for communists, and he was one of the people being looked into. The first instance of the the first definition, “a vessel… used for melting and calcining a substance that requires a high degree of heat” is as follows. When the play was written, communism was something that should not be talked about openly. This is why Arthur Miller disguised a play about communism as a play about the witch hunt.
