Ihas 1 Tina Ihas Professor Melody Hessing Sociology 1111, Assignment 4 February 21, 2018 Part A: Short Answer Questions What is the difference between sex and gender? Explain the importance of this distinction for understanding the dominant gender schema as an ideology. Sex is the innate physical or physiological difference between males and females, differences including primary characteristics such as the internal and external reproductive systems as well as the secondary characteristics that occur during puberty such as height, body hair, and muscularity. Gender refers to the socially constructed characteristics and roles associated with being a male or a female. These roles and characteristics are not the same for each society and have changed over time. For example, in Scotland men who wear ‘skirts’ are not considered feminine, nor are the men of the Middle East in their ‘dresses’. The difference between sex and gender is an important distinction for understanding the dominant gender schema, which theorizes, that sex is a biological characteristics that produces two options, male or female. We know this to be inaccurate as intersex individuals, people born with variations of male and female physical and/or physiological sexual characteristics, occur approximately 1 in 2,000 births. The schema also suggests that gender is a manifestation of biological sex rather than a psychological function of an individual. As stated in the textbook (page 381), as with an individual’s sex, one does not choose their gender, one naturally assumes their gender, which may or may not coincide with their biological sex. Word Count 211 Note: When asked, my 12 year old daughter summarized sex and gender as, “sex is physical and gender is mental”. The world is a much different, more open minded and accepting, place than when I was 12! Works cited Little, W. (n.d.). Introduction to Sociology (2nd Canadian ed.). (n.d.). I am feeling a little insecure about getting it right and would like to make changes next semester if needed. Thank you! What is medicalization? Why is it an issue? Provide an example to illustrate your answer.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
