CHAPTER ONE 1.0 INTRODUCTION TO SIWES The Student’s Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was established in Nigeria in 1987, and it has been sponsored by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF). The SIWES was introduced to aid Science and Technology student in Nigeria to acquire marketable skills. Science and technology is view as a means to transform scientific growth in Nigeria. It is for this reason that the educational system aims at helping students acquire appropriate skills, abilities, and competences both mental and physical as well as equip the individual to live in society. It was observed that a wide gap existed between theory and practice of engineering and technology and other practical oriented courses in almost all Nigeria institution of higher learning. In an effort to bridge this identified gap between theory and practice in our tertiary institutions, the ITF initiated the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). The scheme was designed to provide the much needed on the job practical experience for students undergoing all courses that require exposure industrial activities during the school program. It was planned as a cooperation industrial inter-relationship between institutions of higher learning and industry/commerce in the country. 1.1 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF SIWES The following are some of the aims and objective of SIWES: Provide a front for students to acquire industrial experience in their course of study. Get students ready for industrial work situation they are to meet after graduation. 1

Expose students to methods and techniques in handling equipment and machinery that may not be available in their institutions. Provide students with opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work situation, thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice. Enlist and strengthen employer’s involvement in the entire educational process and prepare students for employment in industry and commerce. 1.2 BASIC DEFINATION OF FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTER (FMC) The Federal Medical Centre Gombe (FMCG) is located within the city of Gombe. This tertiary health institution and was established in 1996 by the Federal Government of Nigeria but moved its operations to the present site on 2 nd May, 2000. It has a total area of 2.1193 hectares but currently only 78.6 hectares is fenced and occupied by the two main sections namely the hospital complex and the residential quarters. The hospital has a total of 12 resident consultant doctors offering specialist services in the various departments they are supplemented by 13 other visiting consultant doctors there are 50 main resident doctors and medical officers with 162 qualified nurses and midwives. The Information communication Technology (ICT) section of the federal Medical Centre Gombe (FMCG) is under the engineering services department of the hospital. The ICT section is newly created to support the hospital information system.
