CHM130 Lab 1 SAFETY, EQUIPMENT , AND THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD Name: Josef Rusch 1. A student enters their laboratory setting and is getting ready to set up. What preparations should be made? (16 points) Students should tie back long hair, remove dangling jewelry, control loose clothing and immediately disinfect their workbench using 10% bleach solution. If dangerous chemicals will be used they should put safety goggles on. The student should make sure they’re aware of emergency exits and are familiar with all equipment. Also, they should make sure they know where all safety equipment is located and how to use it. 2. A student spills chemicals on his or her skin. Explain the procedure that should be followed. (16 points) Rinse the spill immediately with continuously running water and soap. If in the laboratory, notify the instructor. 3. List three things than one can do to protect oneself from contamination/injury in the laboratory. (24 points) 1. Wear safety goggles when working with dangerous chemicals. 2. Dispose of all waste materials properly, such as placing broken glassware in a plastic or metal container only. 3. Keep pens/pencils out of your mouth and ears.
