MODEL CONGRESS Student Information Late Second Party System (1840s-1850s) Objective: Explore and evaluate the issues that helped drive the increasing sectionalism that helped initiate the Civil War. What is Model Congress? Model Congress allows students to develop historical thinking skills through the interpretation of primary and secondary sources in researching major historical issues and events through the primary focus of an assigned historical role. Research: You will each be assigned a role for the Model Congress and are charged with researching their views on Westward Expansion (Mex-Am War) and the effects of new statehood (Compromise 1850 & Kansas Nebraska Act). Use your textbook, any prep books of your choosing, and appropriate online and print sources for your person. You will have ONE class period in the to research and are encouraged to utilize available databases and print media. When researching, you might have to think “If the historical figure were a member of the US Congress, how would they vote based on your interpretation of their positions?” as not all the figures were voting members during the ratification process. Keep in mind: this is not to be an exact reenactment of history. This is an “alternative reality” based on historical fact and research. You should not simply find speeches and writings from your figure to regurgitate. Your ultimate goal is to understand points and positions of historical figures to adequately and relevantly respond to arguments made on the floor.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
