Describe why product / service design is important: -A product/service design reflects the cohesiveness of all parts of the business and how well the company is able to serve a base of customers and their needs. Product and service designs help a company meet address its market opportunities and threats, and they typically have strategic implications for the success of an organization. Without a comprehensive product/service design, a company does not have a proper plan in place to execute and is essentially shooting in the dark. 2. Give two specific examples of a good product design: -Starbucks: their products are fairly inexpensive for them to produce, they are constantly introducing new products, and their stores ubiquitous in convenient locations -iPhone: very well-established product, easy for customers to obtain from almost anywhere, most people can afford iPhones at the prices there are sold but customers can also find cheaper ones online 3. Give two specific examples of a BAD product design: -Lorna Jane: their products are very costly to make and therefore very costly to sell, for every store they only carry one size of each product, and most of their stores are located in areas where there is

little to no demand for overpriced activewear -Tesla: very expensive, very difficult to obtain, and cannot drive long distances 4. What is meant by Strategic Capacity Planning: -Strategic Capacity Planning is a key component of system design used to achieve a match between an organization’s long-term supply capabilities and the level of long-term demand it expects to meet. 5. Why are good Strategic Capacity decisions critical to a Company’s success / problems: -Design of work layout and facilities that will allow employees to work effectively and accommodate for expansion -Design of more uniform output of a product or service to allow for more standardization of methods and components, which will allow for a greater capacity -Improving processes to increase productivity of work and quality of outputs -Managing employee relations and training 6. Will a selected process / facility layout need change, as volume changes significantly: -Yes. If volume increases significantly, a process or facility will need to be improved in order to accommodate for expansion so that it does not negatively impact productivity or effectiveness. Likewise, if volume decreases significantly, a product/facility will need to be changed to be less costly to accomodate for lower revenue 7.
