NSG 3111 WORKSHEET #2 Identify critical factors that impact the labor and birth process and explain their significance. -The Birth Passage: the shape of the pelvis affects the ease of the birth - The Fetus: fetal head, fetal attitude (relation of the fetal parts to one another), fetal lie (the spinal column of the fetus to the spinal column of the mother), fetal presentation, cephalic presentation, breech presentation, and shoulder presentation - Relationship of Maternal Pelvis and Presenting Part: engagement (confirms adequacy of the pelvic inlet), station (changes throughout labor), fetal position -The physiologic forces of labor: contractions (frequency, duration and intensity), bearing down (pushing once the cervix is completely dilated) -Psychosocial considerations: Progesterone withdrawal hypothesis, prostaglandin hypothesis, corticotropin-releasing hormone hypothesis Describe the cardinal movements of the mechanism of labor for a vertex presentation.
