1) Shampoo is a well-known product category that is heavily segmented. Walk into any drug store and there is a whole aisle dedicated to shampoo, sectioned off by the type of consumer that shampoo is targeting. Market segmentation for shampoo is based on a few characteristics, including behavior, demographic, and psychology. Behavioral segmentation is based on how people interact with a product (Market segmenting, targeting, positioning, n.d.). In relation to shampoo, there is a huge color treated hair market, which requires special shampooing behavior. This category can be even further segmented by the color that the hair is treated. Demographic segmentation is based on personal characteristics such as age, sex, ethnicity, etc. (Market segmenting, targeting, positioning, n.d.). The shampoo market is most broadly segmented by men and women, but there are also product offerings for children, as well different textures of hair.
