I do believe social stratification is partly to blame for how successful a child is in their life however, I do believe there are other factors to consider. A child may go to a good school system such as a private school yet if you have teachers that do not keep up with their own education it will be hard for these teachers to instruct the children in their particular field causing the lessons to be outdated. Regarding the author’s article, I believe he is making childhood poverty the biggest factor for a child not having the ability to do well in life (Thomas, 2013). To which I do not feel is totally the cause. Here is a fantastic example that I experienced first-hand. When I lived in Michigan the city I lived in would be considered upper middle class. One would think that the schools in that area would be top notch. Yes, they had computers and they did not want for books, despite all that the school still had children graduate who could not even spell that very word – graduate!
