Before I begin a unit of instruction, I have a clear idea of the knowledge or skills my students will learn. X 3. I use district, state, and/or national standards to identify the knowledge and skills I need my students to learn. X 4. At the beginning of a unit of instruction, I tell my students what the learning targets are; I explain how I will assess them on those targets; and I give my students clear guidelines on how to successfully achieve them. X 5. Before I teach a unit, I use pre-assessments (diagnostics) to find out about students’ prior knowledge, interests, and learning styles, and to identify student misconceptions.
