Lee 1 Amanda Lee Ms. Brooks IB English 1 18 October 2018 Ageless Love Love in the Time of Cholera , by Gabriel García Márquez, was inspired by the love story of his parents, using them as models for his writing. According to an interview conducted by the New York Times , Marquez told them that their young love is portrayed through Florentino and Fermina. This includes their backgrounds, the secret exchange of letters, the violin serenades, and Fermina’s unplanned trip the countryside. Márquez wrote this book because he had always wanted to share the story of his parents. The inspiration for the later part of Fermina and Florentino’s love story is based on a news article about a couple, who were engaged in an affair for 40 years. Unfortunately, they were fatally murdered on a date by a boatman that was trying to rob them, which in turn publicized their secret. He finally wrote this book when “the two stories came together in [his] mind.” Having published Love in the Time of Cholera when he was 58 years old, he felt as though he could only have written such a “terrible drama of love” after gaining “a lifetime’s experience.” The aging of Fermina and Florentino, similar to how important gaining a lifetime’s experience was to write this book, is significant to the theme because it portrays the idea that love becomes more authentic as the lovers get older. When Fermina Daza and Florentino Ariza were young, they had a passionate but undeveloped romance. The two teenagers expressed their love through the exchange of letters that they kept a secret from everyone but Aunt Escolastica. When Aunt Escolastica allowed Florentino to come to talk to Fermina on their porch, Garcia Marquez described their interaction
