Very Basic Components of a Urinalysis (UA) The urinalysis is a relatively easy test to perform. Patients are asked to provide a clean catch in order to avoid contaminating the specimen with cells from external genitalia. Visual: Color: it should be yellow. Not dark, red or brown o Red or brown color could indicate blood or bilirubin o Certain medications may also affect the urine color Clarity: it should be clear, not cloudy o Cloudy urine may indicate infection Dipstick test measures: pH abnormal values may indicate kidney or urinary tract disorder Concentration also called specific gravity . Indicates how concentrated or diluted the urine sample is Protein low levels may be normal. High values may indicate a kidney disorder Glucose any measurable glucose in the urine indicates the need for testing for diabetes. Ketones any measurable ketones in the urine indicates the need for further testing, possibly for diabetes Bilirubin bilirubin is a product of breakdown of RBCs.
