Chemical Thinking P2 S2 Preparatory Work v1.0 | 1 Project 2 Session 2 Preparatory Work Write an initial experimental plan to identify the FD&C food dye(s) present in your assigned commercial candy sample. There are several points you should consider in your experimental design. First, the spectrophotometers in lab can produce absorption spectra (A vs. λ plots) for a substance in solution with one straightforward reading. Second, such absorption spectra (A vs. λ plots) typically have a wavelength of maximal absorption (λ max ), which is considered a differentiating characteristic for the substance. This means λ max can, in theory, be used to identify substances. In lab you will have access to stock solutions of all seven FD&C food dyes. Your task is to devise an experimental strategy and write out a procedure in outline form that identifies which FD&C food dye(s) are responsible for imparting color to the candy your group has been assigned to. 1. The first step for the experiment is obtaining the solution that we will be measuring.
