BIO 101 Plant Form & Function Plant Body Plan Types of Plants 1. Non-Flowering Plants Gymnosperms a. Evergreen trees—pine, fir, etc. b. Don’t use flowers for reproducing. c. Don’t use fruit to disseminate. 2. Flowering Plants Angiosperms a. Monocots 1. Leaves have parallel veins. 2. Seeds have one cotyledon. 3. Flower parts in 3’s. b. Dicots 1. Leaf veins in branched networks. 2. Seeds have two cotyledons. 3. Flower parts in 4’s or 5’s. Plant Body Plan Plant Structures 1. Shoots a. Above ground. b. Stems, leaves & flowers. (=organs) 2. Roots. (=organs) a. Below ground. b. Absorb water & minerals. 3. Growth zones –Meristems a. Apical meristems. 1. Located near the end of the structure. 2. Stem apical meristems (buds)—extend stems and make leaves. 3. Root apical meristems—lengthen roots. b. Lateral meristems. 1. Cause increases in diameter. 2. Secondary growth in older stems especially woody plants. Plant Body Plan Vascular System 1. Xylem a. Hollow tubes of dead cells.
