CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY Domestic violence against women occurs in various forms such as; rape, physical abuse and assault and forced prostitution. In Kenya according to world wide statistics women are the overwhelming majority of victims of domestic violence. Over 30% of women worldwide aged 15 years and above have experienced physical or sexual violence from their partners. Various factors that contribute to such violence, include; low levels of education, religion and socio- economic status of women in the society. Domestic violence against women leads to negative mental and physical health effects. These effects include pregnancy loss or pregnancy complications, victim’s death in some cases and severe physical injuries. Victims of domestic violence are also likely to contract HIV/AIDS or Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) due to sexual coercion and being forced to have sexual intercourse by their partners without protection. In most cases the partner is always unfaithful to the woman. Domestic violence against women is among crimes that are not reported to the police due to shame, lack of finances, lack of awareness and access to services and distrust of the authorities. The main perpetrators of domestic violence against women are men. This is because men always feel the need to be the dominant partner in the relationship. This dominance extends to physical, sexual, financial and even emotional dominance. A common scenario is the case of a woman who is financially stable more than the man of the house.
