Chapter 16 America’s Gilded Age, 1870-1890 Part I (632-656) 1.What factors combined to make the United States a mature industrial society after the Civil War? 2. How did Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller rise to become “captains of industry”. What was controversial about the methods these men used to acquire their wealth (analyze the political cartoon on page 641). Both Andre Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller have set legacies as very wealthy men in American society. Andrew Carnegie was a business man in the steel industry that used vertical integration, buying up companies that were needed to make steel. This meant that Carnegie would have all the materials and equipment needed to produce steel. John D. Rockefeller was a business man in the oil business that used horizontal integration, buying up all of the other oil companies to cause no competition. Both men created monopolies on their industries. This caused controversy because people believed that the men had an iron clamp on the industry, supported by the political cartoon on page 641 that depicts the oil business as being dominated by one company. 3. What motivations inspired Americans into the West to subjugate various Native American tribes? What was the process by which they accomplished the subjugation of Native Americans? As the West became incorporated into the national economy, doom had fallen onto the Indians. Before this, settlers had received no hostility from the Indians, constantly trading with them for food and supplies. Once the settlers wanted the Indians’ land, conflicts between the American army and Plains tribes ensued. Generals used methods similar to those used to defeat the Confederacy, setting out to destroy the foundations of Indian economy. As the armies continued to attack, they broke down the powers of each tribe. After this, eight new states entered the Union in the West, including Nebraska, Colorado, North and South Dakota, Montana, Washington, Idaho, and Wyoming.
