THEORY-PRACTICE GAPTheory-Practice GapThe gap that exists between nursing theory and nursing practice is a widely documentedissue. The theory-practice gap, in simple terms, is the struggle to integrate the knowledgeacquired in a classroom setting with actual practice in the real world. According to Sellman,“Nursing may be primarily practical but it is not solely so; it is neither devoid of theory norabsent in the philosophical arena” (2010, p. 86). The focus of this paper will be to discussstrategies to bridge the gap that has been created between theory and practice.Bridging the GapAs the care standards of nursing continue to shift from customary and traditionalpractices to that of an evidence-based profession, there can often be a disconnection betweenwhat is considered the best practice and what is actually best practice. According to Leach andTucker (2018), this is a huge problem because when clinical practice no longer reflects the bestevidence, the result can be not providing the best possible care. Studies have shown that “thirtyto forty percent of patients do not receive treatment based on the best available researchevidence, and up to twenty percent receive treatments that are actually deemed to be harmful”(Hussein & Osuji, 2016, p. 21). It is only by understanding clinical practice in relation to nursingtheory that the needed skills and knowledge can be kept relevant and up to date.
