here are many pros and advantages of having a social media emergency management system in place. In most cases, social media platforms are free and easy to get started with, giving emergency management and other officials a powerful communications tool and resource without having to really spend a lot of money aside from the costs of a computer and internet service. Those who are not practicing social media emergency management tactics often disregard it because of the lack of knowledge surrounding the features of using it. Let’s take a look at some of the features of having a social media emergency management system… Rapport Development – Social media use in emergency management allows organizations, businesses and communities to develop a rapport between officials and their stakeholders. Officials using social media for rapport development should be active of their social media pages, constantly delivering useful information to those they are wishing to support and engaging with fans of the social media page’s platform. Trust within a community is often only developed with communication between the community and its stakeholders, the people and business owners that make the community work. With social media emergency management practices, communications with the community can be done with simplicity in mind. Warning Information – Imagine that a terrorist attack occurs at a local mall or a tornado is spotted on the ground and doing damage. Maybe a road has been closed due to a sinkhole or one part of a county is experiencing an H1N1 strain outbreak – all of these types of scenarios should result in one particular response: WARN THE PUBLIC. With social media emergency management practices, officials can warn a large portion of the public in seconds. Many people are on social media, of all ages and many of them use mobile devices to access it giving people instant access at any time to any type of important information that they need to know about. Emergency management officials can deliver warnings via- social media in little time and such warnings can be easily disseminated to others via the social media users. Again, rapport development is needed for this to be successful – a common relationship needs to be established built on trust and information needs. Awareness Promotion – Another key benefit of having a social media emergency management system in place is promoting emergency preparedness awareness. Emergency preparedness is an important phase of emergency management because it often involves catering to the Whole Community approach of resiliency whereas the entire community is involved in preparedness opportunities and practices. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
