Discussion Week 9: Inferential Statistics study guide Inferential Statistics : According to Norman & Streiner (2014), inferential statistics allows the researcher to conclude a large group based on the results of a small group. Inferential statistics is helpful in both the research and clinical setting as it provides the framework for making objective judgments about the reliability of the sample (Polit & Beck, 2017). Sampling Distribution: Parameter estimation : used to estimate a proportion, a mean, or the difference between the two groups. Interval estimation : can be vital because it reveals a range of values within the parameter that has a probability of lying. Hypothesis Testing : answer research data using sample data and provides a way to decide if enough data exists to support a hypothesis. For example, does smoking cause lung cancer? Bonferroni correction : to establish a more conservative alpha level a Bonferroni correction is applied, but it can increase the risk of type II errors, concluding there is not a statistical association when one is present. Confidence intervals : sets a range of values for the estimated population. It can be used if one wants to find the percentage of people exposed to a cigarette that will be diagnosed with lung disease.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.

Jill Tulane University ‘16, Course Hero Intern
