AGING AND DISABILITY WORKSHEET 2 Aging and Disability Worksheet Part I Identify 2 or 3 issues faced by the aging population. 1 Health 2 Job Security/Income 3 Loneliness What is ageism? How does ageism influence the presence of diversity in society? Ageism could be described as any prejudice and discrimination which is shown toward older adults. (Schaefer, 2012) Ageism is what we belie ve , it’s our attitude, how we look at something , and the value that we use to justify any age based prejudice, discrimination, and subordination , this might be casual or organized discrimination . This term originated in 1969 by Robert Neil Butler as a way to describe discrimination against seniors, as well as on sexism and racism. Butler defined ageism as a f three connected elements ("Ageism", n.d.) In these elements you find prejudicial attitudes towards older people, old age, and the aging process; discriminatory practices against older people; and institutional practices and policies that perpetuate stereotypes about older people. The term has also been used to describe prejudice and discrimination against adolescents and children, including ignoring their ideas because the y are too young, or assuming that they should behave in certain ways because of their age (Knowledgebase, 2013). What is the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA)? How does the ADEA address issues for the aging population? The federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA); which went into effect in 1968 was passed to protect workers 40 years of age or older from being fired because of their age and replaced

AGING AND DISABILITY WORKSHEET 3 with younger workers who presumably would receive lower salaries. The Supreme Court strengthened federal protection against age discrimination in 1996, ruling unanimously that such lawsuits can be successful even if an older worker is replaced by someone older than 40. Consequently, if a firm unfairly fires a 65 year old employee to make way for a 45 year old, this still can constitute age discrimination (Schaefer, 2012). Research shows that before the enactment of the ADEA, there was evidence of hiring discrimination against older workers , as well as discrimination in promotions and training. Even with the ADEA, age continues to be an issue which still works against many older people, as seen by how long it takes a person of older age to find employment, many times they must take employment with a wage loss when they do finally find employment , and the size of court awards to victims of age discrimination are many times smaller than of a younger person ( 65+ In The United States , 2005) (Schaefer, 2012) . What is being done to address the issues you identified?
