This preview shows page 1 out of 1 page.

Week 3 1. Define Theravada and Mahayana. Describe the Arhat and the Bodhisattva. Explain how each achieves the goal of nirvana. Examine how they relate to some of the key concepts/teachings (e.g., the Four Noble Truths, the three marks of reality). Our book tells us that Theravada is one of the great branches of Buddhism, it is “the way of the elders” and refers to the entire conservative Buddha movement. They practice unchanged teachings of Buddha, appreciation for simplicity, meditation, & detachment. One of the key differences between Mahayana & Theravada is that Theravada believe only monks can attain nirvana. Nirvana can mean many things to Buddhists, it can mean: Inner peace, an end to suffering, and freedom from the world’s limitations to name a few. Nirvana has also been described as “blown out” or “cool” meaning one’s inner fire has been extinguished. Arhat is a word to describe a “perfect being” or “worthy” someone who has achieved Nirvana. It is believed that once an individual achieves Nirvana they will not be re-born. [Mol13]

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
