4.1 Histogram Graphical way to represent information of a discrete random variable Bars / rectangles along the x axis Areas of these rectangles are visually representative of the probabilities for our variable Centred over the 3, w = 1 h = .3 area = 1 x 0.3 = 0.3 Pr [ X = 3] = 0.3 Creating a histogram Rectangles of equal width, centred over each value of x that X can take on The rectangles will have widths so that they are all adjacent to one another The heights of the rectangles are chosen so that Area = Pr [X = x] Each rectangle will be centred over -2, 0, 2, 4 (start w/ -4 Widths have to be the common difference between the variables, `2 Knowing the width we do 1/2bh to find probability / area Standard deviation Represents how closely the data is packed around the expected value, mean B (8, 0,5) is on the left and the boxes are spread out indicating a larger standard deviation B (8, 0,25) is on the right and very large near x = 0.2 indicating a smaller standard deviation
