Surname 1 Name Professor Course Date LSD in Society Introduction Lysergic acid diethylamide abbreviated as LSD is a drug that was declared illegal due to the alterations it brings to the human mind when abused. The drug was banned after being confirmed to cause changes in thought, perception, emotions, and attention of those who abused it. A high percentage of users are approved to have come from the USA and Europe with those at the age fifteen to twenty-four abusing it the most. At first, the drug was meant to be a psychiatric drug due to the changes it brought to the human mind. Medical institutions in the in the US also used the LSD drug in laboratory experiments. However, some of the students started abusing the drug to experience its effects. Some of the adverse effects of the drug started showing out. As such, more research was done on the negative impact of the drug, resulting in its burn in some states. Still, some people use the drug up to date so that they can experience the psychological effects of the drug. Progressive research is being done on LSD do determine the extent of its harm in the current after which it can be eliminated. In this paper, the LSD drug will be discussed comprehensively ranging from its origin, its psychiatric use, the causes of its decreased use, the effects of banning LSD use in the society, the current use of the drug, and the updated research about LSD. The Origin of LSD The lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) was manufactured for the first time on November 1938 by A Chemist from Switzerland called Albert Hoffman while working in Novartis laboratory in Basel. He was studying medicinal plants when he came across the fungal ergot and medicinal plant squill which were to be used to synthesize constituents that would then be used as pharmaceuticals. He elaborated the chemical structure of the nucleus of the Scilla glycosides (Hofmann 91). Although the purpose of the laboratory synthesis was to come up with analeptics, Hofmann managed to synthesize LSD from the lysergic acid. After integrating it, he unintentionally absorbed the small amounts of it and realized that it had powerful side effects. He says: he was affected by dizziness and restlessness of high degree. He adds on that the condition that he slept in an intoxicated home condition that was characterized by an exceptionally stimulated situation where he closed his eyes in a dream-like situation with eyes closed and thought continuously of pictures shaped extraordinarily with kaleidoscopic colors switch. However, that condition faded from his mind after one hour (Hofmann 95).
