Answer both questions: In what ways were the 1920s a "step forward?" In what ways were the 1920s a "step backward?" The era of 1920 was the era of new technologies and innovations. Inventions such as the vacuum, the sewing machine, the refrigerator, electronic irons, electric fans, washing machines, cigarette lighters, and hand held- cameras were all invented in this era (Module 7, The Roaring Twenties Lecture, Slide 9). These inventions were very beneficial and made things much easier for many people. Automobiles were also invented during this era. This was a huge achievement as well as an advancement. The invention of the automobiles also made a huge cultural impact. It helped many people travel to their destinations in a short amount of time. The automobiles also boosted the economy. Gas stations, paved roads, parking lots, garages, repair shops, tourist camps, motels, and traffic signals were all created because cars/vehicles were invented (Module 7, The Roaring Twenties Lecture, Slide 11).
