Even though they were warned, the students deiced to wear the armbands, and got suspended. While on suspension the parents sued on grounds of free speech violation. A US district court ruled in favor of the school that the armbands could disrupt the learning process. So the students then appealed the ruling on the US Court of Appeals, but once again lost, so they took their case to the Supreme Court (SCOUTS). This is a dispute of their first amendment rights.
