Far East in Modern Times Notes 1/28/08 Paper Topic: Origins of the US War in Vietnam and its Progression Pages 1 -18 Most of Asian culture is based off of China Languages were all based off Chinese Agriculture was the base of society o Rice – Monsoon Region – wet all year round – rice becomes main crop – society centers about rice and it has a huge impact. All pre-industrial technology o Farming and Spiritual life tie into each other – helps explain it for them o Had to sustain their country through agriculture o Today: still a very farming oriented society The Middle Kingdom – China considered itself the middle kingdom, the center of asain culture in Asia – has been accepted by most asain countries to be a good example – the further away you got from the china the more distant you got from them. Relationship between china and its neighbors – very little trade between non asain counties (ex. India) o India – Buddha and Hinduism
