Acid-Base Chemistry Jessica Murphy Introduction Robert Boyle in the 1600’s is credited with coming up with the fact that Acids are corrosive and sour, turning litmus paper from blue to red. Bases on the other hand were bitter and slippery, changing the litmus paper from red to blue. This though is a very vague description giving the time period and just how much research could be done with the available amount of techniques. Svante Arrhenius helped to add more detail by saying that a substance that ionizes in water to produce H+ is considered an arrhenius acid, while a substance that produces OH- is a Arrhenius Base. In most cases you are trying to get an exact measurement of the proton count in a substance. Titration allows us to find that. It requires one to add a known amount of base to an unknown amount of acid, or vice versa. Allowing you to know the amount of the unknown’s substance by certain amounts of proportions known already. When using a pH meter while titrating, the pH is monitored while adding small amounts of aliquots.
