Osman 1Ikran Osman 216442253POL1000AMarch 13th, 2019The Existence of Canadian Democracy Analytical Paper Throughout this paper both the Liberal Party and Conservative Party will be analysed. These two political parties state claims in their constitutions, that fall under the themes of freedom and individual vs society. This essay will show, that both parties take ideas from all three ideologies; liberalism, conservatism, and socialism, and end up being more similar than anticipated. As both parties generally value similar ideas in their constitution. The thought of the existence of Canadian democracy is questioned. This will be further explained with reasoning as you go along. The first claim i will be introducing is stated in the Liberal Party’s constitution, “ the Liberal Party of Canada subscribes to the fundamental rights and freedoms of persons under the rule of law and commits itself to the protection of these essential values and their constant adaptation to the changing needs of modern Canadian society”. This claims suggests that, the Liberal Party identifies the freedom of Canadian citizens through what is stated in the rule of law. Meaning Canadian citizens are free to do what they please, as long as they are obeying the law. This can also change overtime as they adapt their view on freedom to the modern Canadian society. The second claim i will be analysing was written by the Conservative Party of Canada simply stating, “ the right to own property”. This claim is straightforward, as the Conservative Party’s outlook of freedom is the right to own property, meaning that a person isfree to chose and own whichever property they please. As long as they have the sufficient funds to own that property. Both claims from the Liberal Party and Conservative party, fall
Osman 2under the same theme of freedom. Although both claims may have contrasting beliefs of what it means to be free, both claims give a unique perspective to the theme. When looking at the ideologies, liberalism defines freedom as “ freedom of appropriation and property. We are freeinasmuch as we are allowed to own things through labour and work” (Breaugh, January 23rd, 2019). Socialism defines freedom as, “ individuals are free economically and all individuals are free and equal in society” ( Breaugh, February 6, 2019). Lastly conservatism views freedom as “ Freedom to submit/obey to the pre-existing order. Sceptical of freedom, freedomitself is suspicious and necessarily limited by the demands and the needs of the established order” (Breaugh, January 30th, 2019). The ideological character of the first claim is socialism, due to the fact that it was deemed to be the most similar, as the Liberal Party believes all
