Data Collection When a researcher is deciding on what type of study they would like to perform, it is critical that they gather the data in a way that will allow their study to remain appropriate and unbiased for the research. Researchers must start their data collection by identifying the need for their intended study, then collect the data (Polit & Beck, 2017). With so many different approaches to collecting and utilizing data, the researcher must identify which way would best suit the individualized research study the best. “Survey research can be an excellent means of obtaining information from large populations, but the true advantage of this research is flexibility” (Keough & Tanabe, pg. 37, 2011). Polit & Beck suggest that researchers need to identify data form the following; testing hypothesis, describing the sample, controlling confounding variables, analyzing potential biases, understanding subgroup effects, interpreting
