RUNNING HEAD: QUANTITATIVE VS QUALITATIVE 1 Quantitative vs. Qualitative Research Walden University Essentials of Evidence-Based Practice 15 April 2018 Introduction One of the biggest tasks within the world of research is being able to distinguish between the different types of research studies. Being able to see, firsthand how a study is being laid out and being able to explain the basis of the study is a great tool for a student to learn. Research, of any type, requires careful examination from many different angles. When you have a study with a poor design or inaccurate information the researchers have not only exhausted their time but also their efforts involved with the study. The purpose of this paper is to review two different types of articles involving two different studies and to critique them, compare and contrast the articles to one another and to discuss qualitative research as a whole. 2 “Research is the systematic inquiry that uses disciplined methods to answer questions or solve problems. The ultimate goal of the research is to develop and expand a knowledge base” (Polit & Beck, p 3, 2017). There are many different types of research methods, two of the basic methods include quantitative research and qualitative research. Stemming from those two methods, a technique called mixed methods can be used when combining both quantitative and qualitative. This mixed-methodology is utilized when researchers are trying to determine an answer to a problem that can not be derived from data alone. Quantitative researchers utilize deductive reasoning, mainly derived from data collected, to generate predictions that can be tested in the real world. Quantitative research is predominantly gathered in numeric form and is utilized to display data statistically. In order to study a phenomenon, quantitative researchers utilize numeric values to express their answers. However, if the phenomenon is patient stress , the researcher would have to determine if a patient’s stress level is high or low, in order to determine that a researcher would have to understand how a person feels, this is where qualitative research comes into play (Polit & Beck, 2017). To answer the question ‘is qualitative research real science’, a researcher must first grasp the idea of a phenomenon and how this can impact the research being conducted. Polit and Beck state that physiologic phenomena, such as blood pressure and temperature, can be measured with great accuracy and precision, however, the same cannot be said for other psychological phenomena such as stress or resilience (p. 12, 2017). Constructivist researchers emphasize a human’s ability to create their own experiences. With that ongoing type of study, researchers obtain data, sift through it and begin to gain knowledge and being to derive new questions through it. “Through an inductive process, researchers integrate information to develop a theory or description that help illuminate the phenomenon under overaction” (Polit & Beck, p 12,
